Kayak Roll Sessions - Winter

What is it?

Kayak Rolling Pool Sessions are hosted Thursdays from 8:30-10:30pm (From January 19-March 30, except for March 9 the week of Spring Break) at the Student Rec Center pool. Roll sessions are a great way for intermediate/advanced whitewater kayakers to practice their skills, and for beginners to get the feel for the movement and paddling of a whitewater kayak, as well as begin to work on the skills of being able to roll.

  • If you are a beginner, come learn the basic skills needed to roll a whitewater kayak, from one of our trained instructors! All equipment and instruction is provided on a first-come, first-served basis each session. AWV has all equipment for 6-7 participants in this instructional portion of the pool session.
  • If you already have your own equipment and want to hone your kayaking/rolling skills, you are welcome to join in on the “open roll session” these evenings! Many members of WVU and the surrounding community bring their boats to the pool to do their own practice.

*AWV recognizes that roll sessions are simply a great way to introduce or hone skills for whitewater kayaking, they do not replace actual on-river instruction with experienced guides.

What does it cost?

Free for students and SRC members. All others $5 per session.

Who is allowed to participate?

Anyone who wants, including students, SRC members, non-members (faculty, staff and families), and community members.

Are boats provided?

AWV has equipment available for 6-7 participants in the instructional portion of the session. Spots in the instructional session are available to any attendees on a first-come, first-served basis each session.

Where do I bring my boat?

Boats can be brought through the control desk after 8:00p. All boats must be clean and will be checked by the roll session monitor. If boats come into the pool excessively dirty, they will not be allowed into the pool.

How do I get in if I am not a student or member?

You must pay $5 for a single session pass. This will get you in the building for the pool sessions. You may not utilize the rest of the building. Doing so will jeopardize the privilege of participating in the roll sessions.

Are there any boat limits?

Because this is an informal session, it is necessary for participants to monitor their own boats in regard to crowding. If the pool gets too crowded, participants are expected to take turns. A monitor will be present at the pool at all times.
