  • Participants should be capable swimmers and comfortable around water. To see more of the essential eligibility criteria required to participate in a whitewater activity with Adventure WV, see our Essential Eligibility Criteria page and scroll to the bottom for “whitewater rafting activities”.
  • Other than being excited about water-based activities and traveling and camping around the Southeast, there are no specific skills required as a prerequisite for this trip. It is recommended that participants have some paddling experience (kayaks, canoes, SUPs, etc.) at least on flatwater (lakes, etc.), but it is not required.
  • It is highly recommended that you attend at least one of our Thursday evening Kayak Roll Sessions before committing to this trip (see below for more info). Kayak roll sessions are free for students and involve instruction on a first-come, first-served basis. *You do not need to have a competent whitewater kayak roll before attending this trip*.

Roll Sessions

We encourage interested participants to attend one of our Kayak Roll Sessions held at the Student Rec Center pool. These sessions run Thursday evenings 8:30-10:30pm, are free for students, and free instruction is provided on a first-come, first-serve basis. This is a great way to try out whitewater kayaking skills and ask questions of the session instructors. Learn more here.
